Our Mission

Lumen High School is a public charter school that is committed to empowering two generations by providing high academic standards, a specialized early learning center and wrap around supports to meet the layered needs of teen parents.

LHS is rooted in belonging, social justice and the empowerment of our staff, students and their children so that a students role as a parent will not be at odds with their role as a student.

Students will gain essential skills needed in order to raise healthy children and receive appropriate coursework needed to graduate prepared for contribution to their community, as well as, advancement into higher education and future careers.

Hope, learning and love…

"Lumen High School and Early Learning Center will provide something I always wanted for my child and I; a place full of hope, learning and love."

— A Teen Mom who dropped out of High School

Lumen’s Core Values:

Belonging: At Lumen, we deeply commit to accept and value every student and staff member within an environment of connection and contribution. We want everyone to say, “I belong here. I am wanted here. I can learn here.”

Flexibility: Lumen has a shared belief that the unique learning experiences of being a student and a parent do not need to be at odds. We will have individualized pathways with a fluid and supportive curriculum that collaborates across all subjects. Our main mindset is that learning happens throughout the school day (and beyond) and all learning is equally valuable.

Discovery: Lumen has a shared belief that curiosity, reflection and evaluation are personal and necessary steps for deep learning. As each individual person contributes in these ways to their learning, the Lumen community is enriched and all of us become better learners, educators, parents and peers.

Empowerment: At Lumen, we ask for what we need and speak up for ourselves and others through recognition and advocacy. There is a shared ownership of learning, thinking and contribution to the entire LHS community. We learn together while we strive towards our best selves. We know our responsibilities to ourselves and each other do not end at graduation, but go beyond into our bigger communities.

Tenacity: Lumen’s culture will support resiliency through repeated opportunities for rupture and repair. Students and staff will dig deeply and be committed to the best interests of themselves and the LHS community. We will not give up on ourselves or each other, especially when it gets difficult.
